I think it speaks for itself. 1in6 is an organization worth knowing about in this regard. So is MaleSurvivor.

May I use this space to discuss your more recent post on Alas a Blog? For reasons unrelated to the post, I feeling too fragile to comment there, even if I wasn’t banned.

…as part of a program like Sexual Harassment/Violence Awareness Week, which usually focuses almost exclusively on men’s sexual aggression against women. There is good reason for that focus, of course. Women and girls are the targets of men’s sexual aggression more frequently and more systemically than men and boys are targeted by sexual aggressors of any gender.

Am I right in understanding that the statement that “Women and girls are the targets…” is the “good reason” of the preceding sentence?

    Later you say

[Men and boys] do not deserve to be left out of these conversations just because our numbers are smaller.

If the smaller numbers of male survivors does not render them undeserving of inclusion, why is it a good reason for an “almost exclusive” focus, which does, in fact exclude them?

In any case, I do not accept the claim that “Women and girls are the targets of men’s sexual aggression more frequently and more systemically than men and boys…” Rather I would say that the victimisation — in general, and sexual victimisation in particular — of men and boys is more frequently and more systematically erased than the victimisation of women and girls. As a consequence, we cannot know which sex is more frequently or more systematically victimised.

It is perverse to offer the result of the systematic erasure — the appearance that women and girls are more frequently and more systematically — to justify the process that gives rise to that appearance.

This is a subject about which you and I have had a couple of go rounds by now, and I am not sure there is anything to be gained from arguing about it again. We understand this issue in ways that are almost diametrically opposed to each other. So I will say, simply, that I am glad to have your perspective here on my blog. I will eventually post the text of my talk here on my blog as well. When that happens, I will move these comments to that post
